The Barbie movie was already more than Kenough b💛ut now it’s official as the cinema event of the year has passed the $1billion mark at the global box office.
Released on July 21, the Greta Gerwi🎐g-directed movie a𝓰bout the beloved doll was part of the Barbenheiඣmer phenomenon with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
Nolan’s World War II bio🌼pic about the creation of the atom bomb recently passed the 𒁃$500m box office mark – now Barbie has reached an even bigger milestone.
In the process, the film’s director, Greta Gerwig, has ♓become the first solo woman director in history to have a film pass the massive $1bn mark worldwide (£790m).
It is currently the second highesꦑt-grossing film of 2023, with the Super Mario Bros. film, which starred Chris Pratt, just edging clear on a total of $1.36bn (£1.07bn🧸).
The success of both Barbie and Oppenheimer has been welcome to movie lovers who had expressed concern about the future of cinemas a🐎fter the pandemic.
After the success of Gerwig’s latest film, it overtook 2017’s Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, as ♏the highest-grossing film solo directed by a woman.
However, Barbie will have to generate another $100million 🎶(£79m) at the box🗹 office to overtake 2019’s Captain Marvel, which was co-directed by Anna Boden.
And if it wants to catch 2013 animated classic Frozen, it’ll need to collect almost an additional $300m (£236m) during its ꦦremaining weeks at cinemas worldwide.
The Idina Menzel-starring film is currently the highest-grossing film ever to be directed by a woman, with Jennifer Lee listed as a co-direct🌞or with Chris Buck.

At present, Gerwig’s two other films, Little Women and Lady Bird, both of which starred Saoirse Ronan, gro♓ssed a combined total of $298m (£234m) worldwide.
While she isn’t ꦜon directing duties for her next project, Gerwig is expected to have more success after co-writing the screenplay for Disney’s Snow White remake.
And before the end of the decade, she’s expected to finish her work with Netflix on two adaptations of the Chronicle🦂s of Narnia book🐻s.
